Water Management

Wetland Reserve Program

Water management is yet another facet of ecological management that needs to be addressed in most areas of the Midwest that have seen increases in residential growth as well as environmental decreases.

Water environments are home to a vast number of plants and animals that depend upon it for life.  As you may be aware, all life is dependent on water to some extent for life, and it is also home to a vast number of fish and birds.  Ducks, geese, swans and other avian creatures depend on water for their food and being water fowl spend much of their time in or on the water.  Many raptors use water as a primary source for their food, as they hunt fish, while fish obviously depend on water in order to live and flourish, being incapable of living outside water.

Many plants, algae among others, are primary sources of nutrition of birds and fish, and without them would decrease the quality of water available.  Water management allows us to regulate the health of the water and the variety of life in those bodies of water that feed into more commonly used areas by humans and animals.
